Program Overview

MCG Career is pleased to offer our licensed, Government approved Early Learning and Childcare Certificate program. Students can obtain Child Development Worker (Level two) certification through either in-class or online completion of nine – 45 hour long courses and two 200 hour practicum placements over 52 weeks complete the criteria for graduation. The 400 practicum hours can be completed in your current place of employment (paid practicum) or on a volunteer basis in a licensed program or school setting. MCG will support you in determining which learning style (in class or online) is best for you and in securing practicum placements.

Due to COVID-19 classes are currently instructor-led, online.

This program offers each program participant:

  • 405 hours of training
  • 400 hours of practicum in a licensed Early Learning and Childcare centre and/or School
  • Part-time evening classes in a blended format allowing participants to maintain daytime employment while attending
  • Small classroom environment
  • Qualify for Child Development Assistant (Level 1) certification upon completion of one 45-hour course
  • Qualify for Child Development Worker (Level 2) certification upon completion of our certificate program

Vocational training licensed under the Private Vocational Training Act

Admission Requirements

Prospective students will be required to provide documentation to show that they meet the admission requirements for this program. If you are under 16 years of age will require confirmation from the Institution in the form of a written approval from the Director of Private Career Colleges, Alberta Innovation and Advanced Education to enroll in this program.

General Admission Requirements
  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent; AND
  • Credit in either English 30-1 or 30-2 or equivalent; OR
  • Successful completion of the General Equivalency Development Test (GED) with a standard score of 520 in Language Arts: Reading and Writing
Mature Student Admission Requirements

Applicants who have not achieved a high school diploma can apply as a mature student. To apply as a mature student you must be out of school for at least one full year before the beginning of the program and be 18 years of age or older.

  • Credit in either English 30-1 or 30-2 or equivalent; OR
  • Minimum score of 80 on the reading component, 86 on the sentence component and 5 on  the written essay component of the College Board Placement Test; OR
  • Successful completion of the General Equivalency Test (GED); OR
  • Mature students may be admitted as conditional students to two courses in the certificate program. Upon successful completion of these courses, and the recommendation of the Program Manager, they may continue in the Early Learning and Childcare Program
English as a Second Language

In addition to the program admission requirements, applicants whose second language is English must demonstrate a Canadian Language Benchmark score of 7 or above.
